Sometimes a situation can occur where the drainage angle is narrow (narrow angles) and the patient is at risk of developing a very high pressure quite suddenly. We will be able to tell you if you are at risk of this happening, and sometimes a prophylactic laser iridotomy may prevent these sudden rises. Sudden rises in pressure can cause severe pain and can very quickly damage the vision permanently.
Although not everyone with narrow angles actually develops glaucoma, careful examination of the angle structure can identify those patients at greatest risk. This is done using a special contact lens called a gonioprism lens.
